How does Michigan's
low tech mercury spill prevention project work?
It starts with an introductory
letter to a doctor, clinic, hospital asking them
to give a one minute message on mercury toxicity to
patient when they come for an appointment. The patient
is then given two lockable baggies stapled together
above the seal line with a short list of instructions
within one of them. The intent is to make patients aware,
and secure the thermometers as soon as possible within
the home prior to safe disposal.
Elements used are the following. (see
picture)
- a
memo
to health care providers who
will use these when doing intake/update interviews
with a patient especially the ones that are likely
to have those at high risk for mercury as patients.
- clear
label to be affixed to
the bag. They used Ziploc sandwich bags because they
had no competing logo but others would do.
- in-bag
instruction
