There were a relatively small number
of mercury spills reported to the Rhode Island Department
of Environmental Management in 1999 and 2000. The
reportable quantity for mercury spills in Rhode Island
is considered to be any amount that would require
a facility to implement a contingency plan. Table
9 shows the facility type, nature of the spill, and
amount released. Two spills occurred at schools, three
at residences, one at a clinic, and one at a landfill.
The amount of mercury spilled ranged from 30 milliliters
to 5 pounds.
