“Enhancing Pollution Prevention in School and Laboratory Facilities: Lessons Learned from Mercury Reduction Programs”

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Headquarters and Region 3, in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health, US Department of Health and Human Services; University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Waste Management and Resource Center; Illinois Department of Natural Resources;University of Wisconsin Extension Program; Maryland Children’s Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council; Maryland Environmental Service; Maryland State Department of Education and Maryland Department of the Environment.

What:

 

 

A web-based video-cast workshop. The training will cover the risks associated with mercury in schools, and the virtual elimination of mercury from schools. The workshop will also emphasize the use of sustainable science when teaching different scientific concepts to students while stressing to teachers the importance of minimizing the impact to the environment from using certain lab chemicals. The audience can submit questions during conference to panel via email or call-in number.

The feed will be broadcast at high speed and 56k bps so users can access the workshop by dial-up modems or higher speed connections such as cable. All viewers will need to have player software to view workshop which can be downloaded for free beforehand from Real Networks http://www.real.com

 
  Physical Locations
 
  • Main campus of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, in Room F1-F2 in the basement level of the Natcher Conference Center.

    Seating at the at the main workshop location on the NIH Bethesda, Maryland campus is currently limited to 80 persons. Participants intending to attend the workshop at Bethesda location are requested to reserve seating by calling Michelle Coley at the NIH Division of Environmental Protection at (301) 496-7775 or by e-mail coleym@mail.nih.gov.

    Parking spaces on campus are in extremely short supply. Public transit is STRONGLY advise. The Metro (subway system) has a station (Medical Center on the Red Line), which is within a short walk to the Natcher Center. Visitors must have a photo ID card and register at the guard station near at the main entrance before entering the conference area of the building.

  • EPA NE Offices at 1 Congress Street, Boston, MA on the 11th floor in Conference Room No. 1100A, Connecticut. Participants interested in attending at this location should contact Jeri Weiss at (617) 918-1568 or send an email to weiss.jeri@epa.gov.
  • Atlanta Federal Center, Atlanta, Georgia. on the 9th floor in Video Conference Room. The conference room at this location can accommodate about 20 people. Participants interested in attending at this location should contact Wayne Garfinkel at garfinkel.wayne@epa.gov
  • Archbishop Carroll High School at 4300 Harewood Road, NE, Washington, DC 20017 will be offering the conference in an auditorium that can house 600. Please contact Mayme Jiles at (202) 529-0900 x216 or mjiles@archbishopcarroll.org if you plan to attend at this location.
  • EPA Region 3, 1650 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA, 4th floor, Shenandoah Conference Room. Participants interested in attending at this location must contact Donna Mooney by e-mail, mooney.donna@epa.gov. Please plan to arrive at 12:30 p.m. for the 1:00 p.m. workshop.
  • Metropolitan Square 655 15th Street, NW up about two blocks. This location seats 30 people. Contacts to call to minimize security slowdowns at the door are David Duda 741-4369 and Robert Irving 741-4364. If you don't call in advance that's still ok you just have to sign in and get the guard to call upstairs to the 5th floor.

The workshop will be recorded and can be accessed indefinitely after the live broadcast 11/17/03. The recorded session will be available in the archive section of the same NIH website for viewing at any time.
